Ian Adkins

Background

Ian started his career in the car industry, completing a student apprenticeship with Rover, the car manufacturer based in Cowley, Oxford. 

He went on to be commissioned into the Army where he pursued a varied and successful military career.

He commanded a sub-unit of 120 men during the first Gulf War and served as an adjutant of an artillery regiment in the infantry role for an operational tour in Belfast in the early 1990s. 

Subsequently he served in 4 staff appointments, the last two being in the MOD in Whitehall.  These ranged from management planning, and manning & career management, through to information management strategy and equipmemt capability strategy.  

Inbetween these he commanded a company in a REME battalion.  This job included an operational deploymemnt to Kosovo and exercises in Poland and Cyprus. 

Ian left the Army a few years ago as a Lieutenant Colonel, and after a brief spell with Babcock Defence Services set up his consulting business.

Development

A varied military and consulting career, built upon a solid early grounding in engineering provides for a broad educational and training base. 

Ian has the following degrees:

He is also an alumnus of Manchester Business School following a long executive development course.

He won a prize on the MSc course for his dissertation on scenario planning and has a particular interest in strategic planning

Experience

Ian is proud of many achievements, such as:

›  Implementing a Corporate File Plan for the Home Office HQ

›  Producing a business plan for an Integrated Project Team in the Defence Logistics Organisation

›  Producing an Army Information Plan to coordinate efforts to better exploit the British Army's information

›  Leading the reinstatement of a factory group in Kosovo, returning 450 people to work and restoring vital support to Kosovo’s power stations

›  Drawing up a management and governance plan for the Army’s 4th Armoured Brigade and its £31M budget

›  Leading on policy development for the early implementation of the Freedom of Information Act by the British Army

›  Presenting a corporate brief to senior delegations from around the world for BAE Systems at the Farnborough International Air Show
